A cargo pocket is the one on the outside of the thigh, and it is the pocket a phone was made for: flat against the leg, closed with a zip or a flap, out of the way of a hip belt. Nine pieces on the site carry one. Five are the hiking cargo shorts, at 5, 7 and 9 inches with four or five pockets; two are the cargo skorts, at 14 and 16 inches with four or six; one is a pair of six-pocket cargo pants for a summer trail; and one is the winter pair, the fleece-lined cargo joggers.

All nine have a drawstring at the waist, and all but the joggers are a quick-dry woven with a water-resistant finish. The cargo shorts carry the most ratings on this page, the 7-inch pair especially. The skorts are the same pockets on a skirt with shorts underneath. Sizes run XS to 3XL on most cards. Between two letters, take the larger: a full cargo pocket pulls a close waist tighter than an empty one.
